20 Silver Strings

Dedicated to Jimmy Day
I had a dream the other night and it did mystify
You sat before me in a chair and looked me in the eye
How strange, I thought, since years have passed since last I saw your face
That we would have a rendezvous in this unlikely place
On your lap there was a package that your hands did hold
Was it for me or someone else, it was left untold
It wasnt until later I remembered this occurred
And forgot about it, never thinking til the news I heard
Those twenty silver strings you played they wove into my soul
Those twenty silver strings you played now have turned to gold
Then I read the story they were laying you to rest
You left this world just days ago, they said you were the best
Time has its way with everything no matter who we are
But it cant change the things I heard you play on that guitar
Looking through my records for a song that you had made
I came upon the one that had that steel guitar you played
Theres a note upon the jacket that you autographed by hand
And it made me think about the days you played in Willies band
Those twenty silver strings you played they wove into my soul
Those twenty silver strings you played now have turned to gold
